And now… Soulja Boy

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “I love me some hip-hop,” you say, “but what’s really missing is some country music style line dancing.” Well, fret no longer. I give you: Soulja Boy.
Let’s pause for a second while we let that soak in.There. Better. What is there to say that the lyrics don’t already adequately explain? What’s that? You didn’t catch them? Never mind. You can search for them, but you’re better off not. Really. Trust me.
Lest you dismiss Soulja Boy, I should tell you that this song recently spent several weeks at #1 on the charts. Having seemingly combined trousers acquired at the Hammer-bankruptcy yard sale with headgear inspired by Flavor Flav (without, unfortunately, picking up any dance tips from Hammer or being able to really copy Flav’s trick, which is that his getup only works because underneath it is the most dangerous hype man on the planet) Soulja Boy has sent people dancing at clubs, hallways, and bus stops across America. Like the song? Buy it from
Amazon or iTunes.
Folks, this is the stuff for which our kids will mock us. Some people have gone so far as to see this as the death-knell of hip hop. That’s unlikely, but hopefully it will be the warning shot needed to push the genre back to something that’s not an unwitting parody of itself.
